Maries County, Missouri

📜 Brief History of Maries County, Missouri

Established in 1855, Maries County was carved from portions of Osage and Pulaski counties and named after the Maries River, itself derived from the French word "marais" meaning marsh. Nestled in the northern Ozarks, the county’s rolling hills, river valleys, and hardwood forests shaped the lives of early settlers—many of whom arrived from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia in the mid-1800s.

The county seat, Vienna, became a hub for civic life, while nearby communities like Vichy, Safe, and Paydown reflected the region’s pioneer spirit and colorful naming traditions. Agriculture, timber, and small-scale mining sustained families across generations, and the Civil War left its mark through divided loyalties and local skirmishes.
